The Zenless paradox: this week's hottest game is cooling the fastest

A flood of reviews isn't always a good sign. This week, Zenless is the proof.

Start with one number. Zenless Zone Zero has roughly a third of Star Rail's installs. Yet this week its review inflow was more than double Star Rail's. That heat isn't explained by size. The catch: open those reviews one by one and most are one star.

The yardstick here is simple. Not lifetime installs, but how fast this week's reviews pile up — a signal that people are touching the game right now.

“Currently active,” estimated from this week's review velocity rather than installs. Genshin leads, but Zenless more than doubled its HoYoverse sibling Star Rail — on a third of the install base.

This isn't launch buzz. Zenless is over a year old, yet it out-drew both HoYoverse siblings — Genshin and Star Rail — in this week's reviews. Scaled for size, it's the hottest gacha right now, no argument.

Attention exploded. The problem: half of it was one star.

But those same reviews dragged the rating down

The very same inflow ran backwards on sentiment. Zenless sits at 3.71 overall, yet just 2.98 across recent reviews — the second-steepest weekly drop after Epic Seven. Of nine games, only mature Genshin saw its recent stars rise.

Left dot is the overall rating, right dot the recent-review rating. Eight of nine are lower lately.

The point is why. Epic Seven's complaints are event · players — an operations backlash. Zenless is different. Its recent low-star reviews repeat crashing · phone · mobile. Not the content — the game crashes on the device.

The users it pulled in with fun, it's losing to optimization.

So does the heat turn into money? The Apple charts answer

Whether attention becomes revenue is another matter. Read Apple's official grossing charts by country, and gacha doesn't open Western wallets.

Top of Apple's official grossing chart (games). 🇰🇷🇺🇸 are ruled by idle · merge · match; only 🇯🇵 keeps gacha and anime IP on top.

Top grossing in 🇰🇷·🇺🇸 is casual — Royal Match, Monopoly Go — with no gacha in sight. FGO, Monster Strike and Puzzle & Dragons hold revenue in 🇯🇵 alone. Zenless's monetization test is ultimately Japan, and there it's not the popularity rank but stability that decides.

In short, this week Zenless won attention and is losing on stability. If the next patch fixes the crashes, the heat flows into revenue. If it doesn't, this week's one-stars become next week's churn.
How we read it — “Active” is an estimate from how fast each app's recent reviews accumulate, put on a weekly basis (lifetime installs and ratings favor older games, so they're excluded/adjusted). “Sentiment” is the average star rating of recent reviews plus low-star keywords. Revenue cites Apple's official charts (measured, source: Apple). Google metrics are estimates, for relative/trend comparison.
